Beyond design, before code: where strategy meets form.
Unicorn Designer: What does this actually involve? Imagine combining the analytical insight of a UX researcher, the aesthetic eye of a UI designer and the pragmatic approach of a front-end developer into a single role.
Sounds like the ideal AI-generated profile, doesn't it?
Yet, in the fast-paced tech and startup ecosystem, this figure has a definite name: Unicorn Designer.
If you are wondering whether a design “all-rounder” can really exist or whether it is just a myth to save budget, in this article I explain what I do every day and why this rarity is the real accelerator for digital products that work.

Unicorn Designer: what does it mean and what do they actually do?
In the modern technological context, a Unicorn Designer is a mythological and rare job profile that possesses exceptional and hybrid skills.
It is not about being able to do “a little bit of everything’ in a superficial way, but about combining vertical skills in UI (User Interface), UX (User Experience), User Research, Interaction Design and, often, front-end coding.
Just like the creature I am named after, I am a complete designer capable of handling the entire process, from the technical concept to the visual rendering.
The term derives by analogy from “Unicorn Startups” (companies valued at over a billion dollars): it indicates something valuable, hard to find and capable of generating outsized value.
What does a Unicorn Designer actually do?
Being a “unicorn” designer means breaking down silos between departments. These are the pillars of my work:
Hybrid and Transversal Skills: I don't just design interfaces. My work ranges from user research to rapid prototyping to mastering HTML, CSS and Javascript. This allows me to understand not only how an element should look, but how it should “behave” technically.
End-to-End Vision: I am able to take a product from the embryonic idea and guide it through to final development. This continuity ensures that the aesthetic and functional coherence is not lost in the change of hands between different professionals.
Creative and Analytical Problem Solving: I combine a strong creative drive with a rigorous, analytical mindset. Designing a successful tech product means solving business problems through design, making technology invisible and intuitive.
The Bridge between Design and Development: I speak the language of the developers. This shortens delivery times, eliminates technical misunderstandings and allows solutions to be created that are actually feasible on the code level.
Rarity and Value for Business
❌ It is not suitable if:
- you just look for “something nice”
- you want shortcuts
- you don't want to measure anything
✅ It is suitable if:
- you want a project that really works
- you seek clarity
- you want a solid basis for growth
Unicorn Designer what it does
Why do companies look for such a versatile profile? The reason is simple: speed and quality. In an initial or scale-up phase, having a single point of reference that encompasses the entire design stack enables faster iteration.
The term is often used provocatively to refer to an “all-rounder” figure considered unrealistic.
Yet, my experience shows that the integration of these disciplines is the only way to create digital products that are, at the same time, beautiful to look at and flawless to use.
Being a Unicorn Designer does not mean being a superhero, but a professional who has chosen not to set himself disciplinary limits.
It is a choice of responsibility towards the final product.
